Guest fredt Posted October 1, 2004 Report Posted October 1, 2004 I would hazard a guess at ABS wheel sensor gone duff, not an expensive part but the labour charges for diagnosing the problem and then replacing it will be  Quote
fozzer Posted October 3, 2004 Report Posted October 3, 2004 Check connecting cables behind both front wheels, as I have just found out they can break by the multiplug and give the impression that a sensor is up the duff. I soldered the wire on mine and covered in silicone sealer to waterproof and its right as rain. Fraud dealers won't tell you it was something this simple. Thay are easily checked by putting the wheels on lock and looking behind the wheels, there is a thin black cable running between the wheel and inner wheel arch. Quote
popeye2755 Posted October 3, 2004 Report Posted October 3, 2004 Didn't know that an ABS light was an MOT fail? My first Galaxy had an MOT approx 3 years ago, and passed, but with an advisory that the ABS light was on. Have the rules changed, and if so, when? Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted October 3, 2004 Report Posted October 3, 2004 If yours passed with ABS light on, you were very lucky! The rules have always been that the braking system must not be defective, and having the ABS light on means that the system is defective (inasmuch that it is not working as it should do, because the light should not be illuminated). Maybe they tested the brakes and found that the ABS system was actually working correctly, so gave you the benefit of the doubt, hoping that you would get the fault investigated. Quote
johnb80 Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 There are also potential insurance issues eg the car is designed to have ABS and therefore the risks are assessed with this feature, remove the feature and the risks are higher. There are some modern cars (the MCC SMART is one of them) that rely on ABS information to work the stability program, the SMART for example needs this to stop it rolling during the EAK test (7 metre swerve at 60Kph, without the stability control it rolled everytime, with the stability control gearchanges and engine power are limited during certain manouvres. I have to say that the SMART is impressive in it's handling and not once have I coaxed mine into misbehaving so I can see a time, for very good reason, that all of these systems will need to be working correctly during the annual MOT test.Regards - JB Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 ... the SMART for example needs this to stop it rolling during the EAK test ... It's an ELK test, and you are supposed to go EEK when trying it out! :(  Quote
Richmond Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 It is EAK, Ivor, Elk Avoidance Kinetics; in other words, the movement required not to hit an elk. From the fact that my Galaxy has never hit an elk, I assume that EAK is standard on the V6. Quote
MrT Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 It would worry me that only a bit of electronics stops a car from tipping over. Quote
Guest fredt Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 johnb80. Have you seen the shorting plugs on Ebay? they turn oFf the TRUST system and the ABS! even better if your car has been chipped it removes the speed limiter! :( Quote
Guest ajc Posted October 25, 2004 Report Posted October 25, 2004 Two causes I found for the ABS light staying on 1. Brakes need bleeding. Garage didn't do too good a job when changing brake fluid on one occasion. 2. Garage was checking wheel bearings for wear and did this on a rolling road by stopping each wheel in turn. This fooled the ABS system and it took a bit of playing with the brakes and turning the ignition on and off to get it to reset. Allan Quote
